01 Low and slow

Low and slow, next to the fire

A kamado outdoor kitchen brings two ways of cooking together. The kamado is a ceramic charcoal grill for long, slow cooking and smoking. The grill-and-fire element is for cooking over an open wood fire. In a kitchen by FREILUFT, both fit into one plan. How charcoal compares with gas and wood is explained in our guide gas, charcoal or wood fire.

We plan kamado kitchens around the Big Green Egg. It sits in the stone worktop, framed by cabinets in the color of your kitchen.

02 Built in

A built-in kamado grill in the modular system

The modular system has kamado holders for medium to large and for extra-large kamados, each built into a 31 1/2 in (800 mm) cabinet. Each holder comes with a precision-finished cut-out in the stone worktop, a 1/3 drawer with push-to-open and a two-piece hinged front panel in the cabinet color.

The cut-out is specified for the Big Green Egg size you choose. The extra-large kamado holder must not be placed directly against a wall. The lid needs room to open.

03 The island

For a freestanding kamado, choose an Island variant that holds a Big Green Egg kamado. FREILUFT Island: 63 × 30 × 37 3/8 in (1600 × 760 × 950 mm), on wooden legs, with drawers on both sides.

The Island combines a cabinet of 5/16 in (8 mm) marine-grade aluminum, a Nero Assoluto natural stone worktop and solid oak shelves. Because it stands on its own, it works on a terrace, by the pool or as a second station next to a kitchen run.

04 With fire

Charcoal in the kamado, wood in the grill-and-fire element: with both in one kitchen, you can smoke a brisket for hours and grill over open flames at the same time.

Both sit on cabinets of 5/16 in (8 mm) marine-grade aluminum, from the PureAlu Cabinetry System, in the color you choose. Add a wood-fired oven or built-in gas appliances if you like.
