02 Conditions

Planning an outdoor kitchen for Florida

In Florida, the kitchen stays outside through every month, close to salt water, strong sun and heavy rain. These are the conditions we plan for.

Salt air, sun and humidity

Near the coast, salt air settles on every surface, the sun stays strong for most of the year and humidity stays high. In South Florida, the rainy season typically runs from late May to mid-October and brings about 69 percent of Miami's annual rainfall. A kitchen that lives outside needs materials chosen for this: FREILUFT cabinets use marine-grade aluminum AlMg 3.5, an alloy class proven in shipbuilding, finished with Off-Shore powder coating with a chromate-free, nano-ceramic pre-treatment. Clean aluminum and the coating with mild soapy water, clean natural stone without acids, and lubricate the hinges twice a year.

Hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The kitchen is built to stay outside year-round, and it has storm hooks in the plinth that secure the doors. Before a storm, bring in cushions and loose items as you would with other outdoor furniture. We also offer a care check before the hurricane season in May and before the main outdoor season in November.

Outdoor living in Florida, all year

In South Florida, the outdoor kitchen is used in every season, with the busiest months in winter and spring. It becomes part of the house: next to the pool, under a covered lanai or on a terrace facing the water, and in Florida it is also called a summer kitchen. The kitchen does not need to be covered. See how we plan built-in outdoor kitchens, kitchens by the pool and kitchens under a roof, the wood-fired grill at their center, and why the cabinets rely on the PureAlu System. Our Florida outdoor kitchen ideas and the other articles in our guide go into more detail. For hotels, condominiums and clubs, see commercial outdoor kitchens.
