A city planned on paper
George Merrick had Coral Gables fully mapped out on paper by early 1921, and the city was incorporated on April 29, 1925. The city takes its name from the Merrick family home, whose addition was built of native coral rock quarried where Venetian Pool is today.
A 1923 city publication, quoted in the City's design guide, calls native coral rock and stucco on cement tile blocks made in Coral Gables the fundamentals of its construction. Many of the workers who built early Coral Gables were stonemasons from the Bahamas, experts in coral rock construction. The Coral Gables Zoning Code defines Coral Gables Mediterranean Architecture as an architectural style that exhibits George Merrick's vision.
A FREILUFT kitchen does not imitate this style. Its calm lines and a natural stone counter let it stand beside stucco and coral rock without competing: natural stone worktops in Nero Assoluto, Anthracite Black, Taj Mahal and Calacatta Brazil.
