A city built around its trees
Palm Beach Gardens was established in 1959, after landowner John D. MacArthur announced plans that March to develop about 4,000 acres as a new community. The name he had chosen first, Palm Beach City, was not permitted, so in keeping with his garden city plan he called it Palm Beach Gardens. On April 26, 1961, John D. MacArthur had a 75-ton banyan tree moved five miles to the city entrance at Northlake and MacArthur Boulevards, and a second tree followed about a year later. Today the City protects the pair with a historic overlay zone that bars clearing or development within 200 feet of the drip line without City Council approval.
