Outdoor kitchen materials for Florida

Salt air, strong sun, humidity and summer storms test every surface outdoors. This guide compares the common materials by criteria, not by rank.

01 Criteria

How to compare outdoor kitchen materials

Choosing outdoor kitchen materials in South Florida starts with the climate. Four forces work on every surface, all year long:

  • Salt air. Near the coast, salt settles on surfaces and holds moisture there.
  • Sun. Strong UV light fades colors and wears down some plastics and finishes over time.
  • Humidity and rain. Water collects in joints, runs into drawers and stays in closed cabinets.
  • Storms. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Before a storm, everything loose has to be secured.

We compare by criteria, not by ranking. Every material has its place; what matters is how it fits your site and how much care you want to give it. Ask these questions about any kitchen you consider:

  • What is the cabinet body made of, and how thick is it?
  • How is the surface protected, and how are small chips repaired?
  • Where can water collect: joints, fasteners, drawer bottoms?
  • What care does it need, and how often?
  • Which parts can be replaced later, and by whom?
  • What does the warranty cover near salt water, and who stands behind it?

02 Aluminum

Why the cabinet body is marine-grade aluminum

Every FREILUFT kitchen is made to order in Germany and stands on the PureAlu Cabinetry System made from 5/16 in (8 mm) marine-grade aluminum. The material is marine-grade aluminum AlMg 3.5, an alloy class proven in shipbuilding. The body is built from precision-milled aluminum plates, stress-relieved so they stay straight and dimensionally stable, and the surface is protected by Off-Shore powder coating with a chromate-free, nano-ceramic pre-treatment.

Fewer openings mean fewer places for water: the body has concealed connections, with openings only where the engineering requires them. Where water does get in, it has to get out again, so keep in mind that the kitchen has drawers that shed water: water-repellent, not waterproof.

Care stays simple. Clean aluminum and the coating with mild soapy water, clean natural stone without acids, and lubricate the hinges twice a year. A touch-up paint pen for small chips and scratches comes with every original delivery. More on the aluminum outdoor kitchen.

03 On the coast

Planning a coastal outdoor kitchen

Right on the water, a few habits and details matter more than anywhere else.

  1. Rinse with fresh water

Rinse the surfaces with fresh water now and then, especially after windy days and pool parties.

  2. Keep drains clear

Keep drain paths and the space under the plinth clear, so water and salt do not collect.

  3. Ask about anchoring

Ask how the kitchen is anchored and what secures doors and fronts in strong wind. FREILUFT kitchens have storm hooks in the plinth that secure the doors.

  4. Check before the season

Check the kitchen before hurricane season and again when the main outdoor season starts.

  5. Built to stay outside

A FREILUFT kitchen is built to stay outside year-round. The kitchen does not need to be covered. We plan and supply these kitchens in South Florida, close to the water or right on it.

04 Other materials

Stainless steel, stone and wood

Stainless steel outdoor kitchens

Stainless steel is the familiar choice for grills, doors, drawers and complete cabinets. It is not one material but a family of grades and finishes, and they behave differently near salt water. Ask which grade is used for every part, including hinges, handles and fasteners.

Natural stone countertops

Stone is the usual counter surface outdoors, yet types differ in hardness, porosity and how they handle heat. Ask about sealing, the edge finish and cleaning. The FREILUFT range offers natural stone worktops in Nero Assoluto, Anthracite Black, Taj Mahal and Calacatta Brazil. According to the manufacturer, Nero Assoluto withstands heat up to 1,112 °F (600 °C) and resists cuts and scratches.

Wood

Wood brings warmth, but outdoors it needs protection and regular care, and it should not sit in standing water. In FREILUFT kitchens, wood appears where it can be looked after: solid oak shelves with five coats of yacht varnish.

Masonry, stucco and HDPE

Each of these materials is used in outdoor kitchens across Florida. How well it works depends on the product, the details and the care.

Masonry and stucco islands are built on site. They are heavy and permanent and need a sound foundation. Their weak points are in the details: how the finish is sealed, how water drains from joints and appliance cutouts, and what happens when an appliance is replaced years later.

HDPE cabinets (high-density polyethylene) are made of a solid plastic. Here the questions are about sun and heat: how the material is stabilized against UV light, how stable the color stays, and how much clearance it needs from the grill.

05 At a glance

No ranking. Each row shows where a material is typically used, what to watch in salt air and sun, and what to ask before you decide.

Typical use Watch in salt air and sun Ask about
Marine-grade aluminum Cabinet bodies and fronts The coating and its pre-treatment decide how the surface ages. Alloy, thickness, coating process, touch-up
Stainless steel Grills, doors, drawers, complete cabinets Grades and finishes differ; plan regular cleaning near salt water. Grade of every part, including hinges and fasteners
Masonry and stucco Islands built on site Sealing, joints and cutouts need attention. Foundation, waterproofing, replacing appliances later
HDPE Cabinet doors and boxes Sun and heat are the main questions. UV stabilization, color stability, clearance to heat
Natural stone Countertops and backsplashes Types differ in porosity and heat behavior. Sealing, edge finish, cleaning
Wood Shelves, boards, accents Needs protection and regular care. Species, finish, care interval

Questions about materials

Frequently asked questions

Look at three things: the core material and its thickness, the surface treatment and the care it needs. A FREILUFT kitchen uses the PureAlu Cabinetry System made from 5/16 in (8 mm) marine-grade aluminum, protected by Off-Shore powder coating with a chromate-free, nano-ceramic pre-treatment. Ask the same questions about any other material and compare the answers side by side.
