A town across the lagoon
West Palm Beach was laid out by Henry Flagler as a residential and commercial town across the lagoon from his Palm Beach hotels, and residents voted to incorporate it on November 5, 1894. In 1909 it became the seat of the newly created Palm Beach County. West Palm Beach faces the Lake Worth Lagoon, a 20-mile estuary where ocean water from two inlets mixes with fresh water from flood control canals and turns brackish. Where seawalls line the lagoon in West Palm Beach, the county has added planted habitat at public parks such as Currie Park and Osprey Park.
