How to compare outdoor kitchen brands

No ranking and no list of names. This guide shows what to look at and what to ask, so you can compare outdoor kitchen brands yourself.

01 Criteria

Outdoor kitchen brands: what to compare

Outdoor kitchen brands differ in what the cabinets are made of, how the fire works, who installs the kitchen and what the warranty covers. Brochures look alike. The answers to a few plain questions do not.

This guide is published by Ensch Outdoor Living LLC. We plan and supply FREILUFT kitchens in South Florida, so we are one of the brands you may compare. That is why this page gives criteria, not a ranking. The judgment is yours.

Six things are worth comparing:

  • The cabinets. Material, grade or alloy, wall thickness and coating.
  • The fire and the appliances. What you cook on (gas, charcoal or wood), and how each gas appliance is certified.
  • How the kitchen is made. Made to order for your site, or from stock.
  • Who installs it. Licenses, insurance and permits.
  • The warranty. In writing, before you sign.
  • The years after. Service and care near salt air.

02 Six criteria

Six criteria, one by one

The cabinets

Ask for the material, the grade or alloy, the wall thickness and the coating in writing. Stainless steel is a family of more than 100 alloys. Two grades are common in architecture: Type 304, and Type 316, which adds 2 to 3 percent molybdenum for better resistance to chlorides. FREILUFT cabinets stand on the PureAlu Cabinetry System made from 5/16 in (8 mm) marine-grade aluminum.

The fire and the appliances

The Florida Building Code requires gas cooking appliances designed for permanent installation, including grills, griddles and barbecues, to be listed to a recognized standard, such as ANSI Z21.58/CSA 1.6 for outdoor cooking gas appliances, and installed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Cabinets, fronts, worktops, storage and the grill-and-fire element come from Germany; built-in gas and electric appliances are US-certified appliances sourced in the United States.

Made to order or from stock

Some kitchens are assembled from stock modules, others are made for one site. Ask what is made for your project and when the layout is fixed. Every FREILUFT kitchen is made to order in the FREILUFT Manufaktur in Nordwalde, Germany. Production starts once the layout drawing is approved; after that the layout can no longer be changed.

Who installs it

In Florida, trades such as electrical, plumbing and general or residential contracting require a state license, while cabinet installation and masonry do not, and local building departments may have their own license requirements. An occupational license or an LLC registration alone does not qualify anyone to act as a contractor. In Florida, a state-registered or certified contractor's license number must appear in every offer of services, business proposal, bid, contract and advertisement, and on each building permit application. Anyone can verify a Florida contractor license online with the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, by name or license number.

The warranty in writing

Federal rules require that the terms of a written warranty be available for you to read before you buy, and a seller who sells in your home must offer you copies of the written warranties before the sale is completed. Ask who the warrantor is for the cabinets, the countertop, each appliance and the installation. Built-in appliances carry the warranty of their manufacturer, shown separately from the warranty by Ensch Outdoor Living LLC.

The years after

Near salt water, every outdoor kitchen needs care, whatever the brand. Ask who services the kitchen after installation and how quickly. We offer a care check before the hurricane season in May and before the main outdoor season in November, and a service visit within 10 business days of your request.

05 Our answers

How we answer these questions

We ask ourselves the same questions. Every FREILUFT kitchen is made to order in the FREILUFT Manufaktur in Nordwalde, Germany. The cabinets are made from marine-grade aluminum AlMg 3.5, an alloy class proven in shipbuilding and finished with Off-Shore powder coating with a chromate-free, nano-ceramic pre-treatment. Cabinets, fronts, worktops, storage and the grill-and-fire element come from Germany; built-in gas and electric appliances are US-certified appliances sourced in the United States.

We deliver the kitchen, set and level the cabinet modules and place the stone worktops. Foundations, anchoring and the gas, electrical and plumbing connections are made by Florida-licensed contractors engaged by you or your builder, who also apply for the permits. Built-in appliances carry the warranty of their manufacturer, shown separately from the warranty by Ensch Outdoor Living LLC. The terms of our own warranty are on the warranty page.
